Blizzard

Still shots taken from a couple of webcams set up by David at the house show just how the snow has accumulated in Reston today.

Reports vary about exactly how much snow has fallen or will fall - perhaps more than 2 feet by the time that it stops.  It also seems to be windy, causing the snow to drift.

Not sure whether to be sorry that we are not experiencing such momentous and unusual weather or just to be grateful not to be caught up in it!!

Winter Storm Jonas

This was the weather in Reston at the  time that David's flight was due to take off this afternoon - it had been brought forward by a couple of hours but was still one of the last to leave Dulles airport.

As predicted the snow started in the early afternoon and was soon covering everything quite thickly..

At the airport David watched the conditions gradually deteriorate..

We were not at all sure that the flight would take off but it did and he will be home with us tomorrow morning.

Back in Reston the snow is due to fall steadily for at least the next 24 hours, so very difficult conditions.

Waiting for the Blizzard

In the last few days, the temperatures in Reston have been very low indeed and everything is frozen.  David sent the above picture of a lake near his office.

The Washington DC area and much of Northern Virginia is now bracing itself for the first real snow of the winter - a major blizzard which is due to start on Friday afternoon/evening and continue into Saturday or even Sunday.  The forecast suggests that up to 2 feet of snow is possible and the Governor of Virginia has declared a state of emergency.

Schools are already closed and people are following advice to stock up on food in the supermarkets. Above is a picture of the fresh produce section of Trader Joes in Reston which was posted by a local news organization on Facebook.  The metro will be closed from Friday evening for the duration of the snow.

David is flying home to the UK tomorrow so we are hoping that the airport will remain open and that his flight will be able to leave as planned.

Congratulations James!!

New Shoes!

Tomorrow is a big day for James, Lauren and Theo as it is James's PhD graduation.

So today Theo was trying out his new shoes to complete his outfit.  They are 'crawling shoes' and so they were duly put to the test..

(Penguin boy-tights are not part of the Graduation outfit but are great for crawling!)

Home and Away

In the US it is Martin Luther King Day and hence it is a bank holiday for David.   Lauren sent him on a reconnaissance mission at our local Giant supermarket for baby products in preparation for their trip to visit us in March.

It all looks very familiar and there are even some of the same brands.

This evening I skyped with David whilst looking after Theo as James and Lauren went out for dinner.

Synchronised Snowing!

After such a long wait this year for the first snow of the winter in Reston, it came on the same day as snow also fell in many parts of the UK!

David reported frenetic activity at the bird feeders today and a steady fall of powdery snow, with just an icing sugar dusting when it stopped this afternoon.

Here in Leamington there was very little snow to be seen although it was snowing first thing this morning.  When James took Theo for his swimming lesson, however,  there was a good covering in Rugby..
