There are many very tall and very lanky palm trees at Waikoloa.
They are not native to Hawaii but they thrive here and they are all over the resort, shading the lagoon, framing the sunset.
Today they were felling some palm trees - many of them have very pitted trunks - whether due to termites, other insects or birds, it is hard to tell. Presumably these are considered dangerous.
The process of bringing them down seems to start with a guy in spiked shoes and a dubious looking safety harness shinning up the 40 foot or so of trunk to the top of the tree. No mean feat at the best of times but in 30C not a job for the faint hearted.
In David's photo, above, he has just arrived at the crown of the tree where he will secure several ropes which will guide the fall of the tree once he is safely on the ground again.
They do look rather thin to climb up. I shan't be applying for that job.
