Green Woodpecker

This morning a young green woodpecker spent a considerable time on the lawn at Stonefield collecting insects.

Although not yet showing his full adult colour, he was a very handsome bird and surprisingly well camouflaged..

Initially his parent bird came to the lawn with him and they went through an unusual ritual of bobbing up and down whilst facing each other.  The parent bird then opened its wings and held them half open and fed the younger bird.

Unfortunately at that stage I was afraid of disturbing them so didn't go and fetch the camera but it was an extraordinary display.
