Corned Beef and Cabbage

Each year we have seen on sale in the supermarket the traditional St Patrick's Day meal ingredients - corned beef brisket with cabbage, carrots and red skinned potatoes.  However we have never actually tried the meal itself.

David received a recommendation that the corned beef dinner at the Glory Days grill was good and so this evening we walked up there to try it out - albeit one day early for the big day!

Obviously it was also necessary to have the traditional accompaniment!

This traditional St Patrick's Day meal - as with the alternative of Shepherds Pie (made with beef), topped with cabbage in the mashed potatoes, is not in fact an Irish meal.

The tradition is an Irish-American one which began when Irish immigrants to the US were unable to afford the salt pork that was part of their diet in Ireland.

The tradition seems to be well established now around this time of year and all year round appears on menus in the form of a Reuben sandwich (salted beef brisket, sauerkraut).

Well we were pleased to have tried it but are not sure that it will become a tradition for us!
