Aquatic Garden Creatures

At Kenilworth yesterday there were many small painted turtles.  Signs warned visitors to be careful not to step on them (they start moving around freely when they are about the size of a quarter - or 10p piece).

They are bigger now - perhaps three or four inches long - some were sunbathing.

This little one seemed to have found a neat way to enjoy the sunshine whilst still cooling off.

We had anticipated that we might encounter plenty of mosquitoes at the garden and had prepared accordingly.  However, the most prolific insects seemed to be the dragonflies and damselflies..

David managed to capture quite a few using a (digital) long lens.

Bees were also busy visiting the flowers..

We heard many frogs and saw frogspawn and tadpoles in the ponds - and just one Virginia Green Frog as we have seen in the stream near the house.  He was pretty well camouflaged in the mud.

Finally, when we walked out on the boardwalk to look over the Anacostia river, we saw this bird flying high overhead.

David managed to capture several photos of this adult Bald Eagle as it flew along the river.
