Skyline Drive

It wasa bright, sunny, very chilly (41F) morning when we joined Skyline Drive at Rockfish Gap (the 'bottom' end).

The air was very clear and it was possible to see several mountain ranges in the distance beyond the Shenandoah valley.

The autumn colours were very beautiful against a clear blue sky.

Early on the road was quiet but it became busier as we drove.

Sadly we did not see any bears today..

The butterflies and flowers that we saw on our last visit are now gone

The patchwork of greens and oranges on the hillsides was beautiful.

We left Skyline Drive at Thornton's Gap and headed down the valley where there were many small shops and businesses.

One amazing sight which sadly I failed to photograph was on a grassy area in a small village where I thought what I was seeing was a small flock of black chickens.  As we got closer it was clear that they were black vultures - there was a carcass by the road of an unfortunate deer and about five or six vultures pecking at it.  Another  eight or ten were standing by.  An extraordinary sight!
