At the Kennedy Centre

Once a year the John F Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts in Washington DC  hosts an event known as the 'Museum Shops Sidewalk Sale'.

In a large room high up in the Centre, about fifteen different museums - a diverse collection from the Supreme Court Historical Society to the Spy Museum - each sell their clearance items to the general public at substantial discount.

We did a little shopping and then headed out onto the huge roof terrace to look at the views over Washington, which are spectacular..

Back inside the building we tagged onto the end of a guided tour and took the opportunity of a few photos..

The 'Grand Foyer' lives up to its name.  All the main auditoria lead off this foyer.  At one end is the Millenium Stage where there is a free for all-comers performance 364 days of the year - always at 6pm.

The halls leading off the foyer - the Hall of Nations and the Hall of States are lined with the relevant flags..

The whole building is on a very grand scale and operates as a 'living memorial' to President John F Kennedy.  A massive copper sculpture dominates the entrance to the Opera House.

We hope to return for a performance one day.

  1. Another sale?! Fantastic views though and quite some building to look around. Looks like a performance would be a real treat. Opera? Ballet?
